Varistoren und MOVs sind Schaltungsschutz-Komponenten, die zur Unterdrückung von Überspannungen, transienten Spannungsspitzen und Stoßspannungen in elektronischen Systemen eingesetzt werden. Sie werden häufig in Stromversorgungen, Industrieelektronik, Unterhaltungselektronik, Kommunikationsgeräten, Automobilelektronik, Haushaltsgeräten, LED-Beleuchtung, Messgeräten und Embedded-Systemen verwendet.
